The Zanzibar Archipelago is an exotic arcadia in the tranquil blue Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. People have enjoyed the calming scenery and pleasant atmosphere of this charming African getaway for centuries.

Historians believe merchants from India and the Middle East began using Zanzibar as a trade hub in the first century AD. These tropical islands were in an ideal location for trade between mainland Africa, Asia, and Europe. Over the past two millennia, the archipelago was an autonomous region when not under British, Omani, and Portuguese rule. Today Zanzibar is again an autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The Zanzibar Archipelago was attached to Africa until the end of the last ice age, when sea level rise from melting glaciers separated the islands from the mainland. Large mammals such as buffalo, gazelle, and zebra once roamed the region before the rising sea isolated Zanzibar from Africa. The humans who inhabit the islands have become seafaring people who live in peaceful harmony with their natural environment.

For centuries the Swahili people have relied on traditional Ungalawa double-outrigger canoes for fishing, trade, and transportation.

Stone Town was one of the wealthiest cities in East Africa at the peak of Zanzibar’s era of international trade. Today the city is a popular tourist destination rich in artistry, history, and culture.

Zanzibar is an alluring African oasis full of interesting history, natural beauty, and nature galore. The enchanting islands offer relaxing beaches, tropical mangroves, and lush coastal forests with hundreds of bird and fish species, dolphins, sea turtles, and the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
