South Luangwa National Park, located in the eastern half of Zambia, in Southern Africa, is a remote wildlife sanctuary where tropical flora and fauna thrive sheltered from outside interference. South Luangwa is a unique destination that offers an authentic safari experience to nature enthusiasts seeking adventure as well as a window into its unspoiled landscapes and magnificent wildlife.
The park is home to an impressive array of rare and exotic animals. From the mighty lions, agile leopards, and cunning hyenas to the graceful giraffes and gentle African elephants. This untamed and exotic backdrop creates an extraordinary experience for those exploring South Luangwa National Park. Guided game drives led by knowledgeable and experienced rangers allow for safe observation of the park’s dangerous, yet majestic fauna.

Slow and peaceful walking safaris, led by experienced guides who offer a unique local perspective, give visitors the time needed to take in the beautiful surroundings and find peace in nature.

Because it is more secluded, and therefore less crowded than other parks, a sense of solitude and peace ensues when exploring this untouched gem of Southern Africa.

In addition to the wild and adventurous parts of South Luangwa, there are also beautiful, tranquil experiences to be had. Known the world over for its dawn song, South Luangwa starts each day with a symphony of over 400 species of birds calling out to the rising sun.

Far from the bustle of man, its sweeping savannahs, gentle rivers, and incredible wildlife are seemingly preserved in time. However, the conservation efforts of South Luangwa are relatively recent. During the safari craze of the 19th century, the park was virtually trampled. European explorers seeking to map Africa, including legends like David Livingstone, journeyed through the region bringing worldwide attention to Southern Africa. This influx of outside interest led to habitat degradation, poaching, and disruptions to local indigenous communities.

In the early 20th century conservation efforts began in the damaged areas and restoration of the park’s natural beauty began to take shape. The land became a part of the Luangwa Valley Game Reserve, which ensured some protection from poaching and outside intervention. However, it wasn’t until 1972, with the establishment of South Luangwa State Park, that real strides were made in the protection and preservation of the park’s rare and endangered species.

This ‘diamond in the rough’ is now a vital home to abundant wildlife, research, and ecotourism which helps to support ongoing conservation.
